Congolese golfer wins Ndola Open

CONGOLESE golfer Nzweba Cosmand yesterday stunned Zambian golfers when he posted an impressive 153 gross score to win the 2005 Ndola Open Golf championship.
Cosmand, who was playing in a Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) major tournament for the first time, was runaway winner with six strokes better than runner-up Rabson Kopalande jnr from the host club, Ndola.
The Congolese golfer, who is from Likasi Golf Club but has since affiliated with ZGU, said he was happy to win a major title in his first competitive tournament in Zambia.
The all day 36-hole net winner was Amos Kauseni who beat Cosmand into second place after netting 152, a stroke more than the Congolese.
In the B Division, the 36-hole gross winner was Ishmael Zamakda who brought 177 gross and was followed by Roberto Sabbadin who emerged runner-up on 178 gross after a count back.
The 18-hole afternoon net winner was Dr Dixon Tembo who got the first slot on a count back with Mitesh Desai after tying on 74 net.
The morning net winner was Mohen Naik after a count back with Kopalande jnr who had tied with him on 74 net.
And ZGU vice-president North Nangalingam Sothylingam thanked Ndola Golf Club for organising prizes for the competition which was being defended by Irfan Patel.
Sothylingam also announced the banning of all players who have failed to show up at the tournament from all ZGU organised events.
He said the banned players should not be allowed to play until they pay the K50,000 penalty fee.
Meanwhile, ZGU yesterday awarded the top three golfers on last year’s order of merit with shopping vouchers worth K7.5 million.
The recipients of the awards were Geoffrey Banda who got K3 million worth of a voucher, Frazer Siwale pocketed K2.5 million and Beza Daka received K2 million.
