GREEN Buffaloes yesterday scooped the Zambia Volleyball Association (ZAVA) Open tournament when they beat Red Arrows 3-0 in the finals and walked away with K500,000.
And in the ladies category round-robin, Green Buffaloes ladies team also emerged first, walking away with K500,000, after beating Government Printers 3-1 in the last game.
In the all defence forces final Arrows found the going tough against Buffaloes with the airmen struggling to get their act together when the soldiers defended and attacked throughout the game.
Arrows failed to win a single set throughout the game and the army side were worthy winners.
In the ladies category, champions Buffaloes won all the games while Printers who were in second position won three games together with Barclays while Arrows and Nkwazi only managed a game each.
Eleven teams participated in the tournament, six of which were men’s teams and five ladies teams.
The teams included champions Green Buffaloes, Red Arrows, City of Lusaka, Nkwazi, Chilanga and Mazabuka in the men’s category while the ladies had Green Buffaloes, Government Printers, Nkwazi, Barclays and Red Arrows.
Nkwazi and Chilanga were eliminated in the preliminaries leaving Buffaloes, Arrows, City and Mazabuka battling it out in the semi-finals.
Arrows won the first set but City managed to equalise in the second set making it 1-1 before Arrows got back in contention and duly qualified to the finals after beating City 3-2 in what seemed to be a die-hard situation.
