Local boxers lack exposure — Sapi
By Sports Reporter
OUTGOING Boxing Board of Control (BBC) chairman Nelson Sapi has bemoaned the poor performance of local boxers due to irregular fights and lack of exposure at international level.
Sapi, who is now a regional vice-president of the African Boxing Union (ABU), said that now that he had a high position in continental boxing, his challenge would be to ensure that a title fight was staged in Zambia in the next six months.
“Zambia will have to host an ABU title fight for our promising boxers at least once a year. As the vice president for our region, I will be contacting other member countries in our region to also host ABU title fights,” he said.
The ABU veep thanked Government for giving him an opportunity to head Zambian professional boxing which has helped him break through into the higher ranks at continental level.
“I was chosen as vice-president because of the role I played in our local professional boxing, so I would like to thank the Government for awarding me a chance to drill our local boxers,” he said.
Meanwhile, the World Boxing Council (WBC) is scheduled to hold a convention on October 2 to 8 in Spain next year which will be proceeded by the Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) meeting to be held in Wales.
