Nkonjera signs up for Grand Tiger clash

By Sports Reporter

VETERAN wrestler William ‘Grand Tiger’ Nkandu has signed a contract with his rival, Kojas Nkonjera for tomorrow night’s fight of the giants at Nakatindi Hall in Lusaka.

Nkandu said yesterday that the fight which has been scheduled for 18:00 hours had been approved by the Boxing Board of Control (BBC).
“Everything is in place and Nkonjera is in Lusaka. I don’t see anything hindering this match because it has been approved,” he said.

Nkonjera said he was geared for the fight and vowed to leave Nkandu in pieces adding: “I am not Wabalozi (in reference to the Congolese wrestler who perfromed black magic on ‘Tigerboy’ in the ring). I’ll make sure Nkandu is left in pieces after the match because am 100 per cent ready for him,” he said.

BBC secretary, Bernard Nakachinda said tomorrow’s tournament was sanctioned and Nkandu was given the greenlight to hold the tournament.

Meanwhie, renowned Kitwe veteran wrestler, Hugo Mulenga has u-turned on his earlier decision to fight William ‘Grand Tiger’ Nkandu next month, just days after announcing a rematch between the two that has waited for 26 years.

Mulenga said in Kitwe yesterday that his family had advised him against fighting following his ill-treatment by Government after the fatal Felix Bwalya title bout in 1997.

Mulenga said when he announced his intention to fight Nkandu, it was for wrestling, but soon after that received calls from family members, home and abroad, requesting for a meeting which took place on two days ago.

“Everyone told me not to fight because I was embarrassed by the Government after that Felix Bwalya fight against Paul Burke. I respect my family and from this point, I wish to permanently retire from wrestling,” he said.
