ZAAA chiefs wrangle over AGM

By Sports Reporter

A PLOY has emerged in the Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) where the executive wants to postpone its annual general meeting (AGM) from October this year to March next year.

Some club administrators seeking to contest positions in ZAAA are discontented with the move to postpone the AGM from October when the term of office for current office bearers led by association president Elias Mpondela expires.

But according to a circular dated June 14, 2010 signed by ZAAA general secretary Phil Kubombela to club chairpersons, secretaries and Areas Boards, the AGM would be held in March next year.

“As you may all know the term of office for the current executive committee comes to an end in March 2011,” the circular read in part contrary to the provisions of the ZAAA constitution Article 10 6 (a) on terms of office.

When contacted for a comment on the development, Kubombela said the association had not yet set dates for its AGM and that the public would be informed as soon as that is done.

In his circular, the general secretary also suggested that most members of the athletics family wanted Mpondela to seek another term of office much to the annoyance of his challengers.

“A lot of members in our athletics family have seriously given thought and careful consideration that our president Mr Elias Mpondela continues in the same capacity as president to enable him accomplish a lot for ZAAA in the next term of office.

“ZAAA has made remarkable progress since 1999 under the leadership of Elias Mpondela. Mpondela has the best chance to source for resources which we don’t have,” Kubombela said in the circular.

Kubombela said Mpondela had spread athletics around the country creating Area Boards and inspiring local athletes into a spirit of life while enhancing their camaraderie and good sportsmanship.
