Miss Inter-continental Zambia bails out Monze’s Kaumba clinic

By STAFF WRITER

REIGNING Miss Inter-continental Zambia, Stephanie Musenge has adopted Kaumba Rural Health Centre in Moomba constituency in Monze where she has contributed items such as mealie meal, pillows, blankets, bed sheets, mattresses and chlorine.

Musenge officially made the presentation at a cocktail last Saturday at Holiday Inn that was attended by Moomba Member of Parliament Vitalis Mooya, directors of Miss Inter-continental Zambia beauty pageant and executives from different organisations that contributed towards the donation.

As title holder of the Miss Inter-continental Zambia, some of her duties revolve around seeking support to help people who may be unable to do so themselves.

Since being crowned in 2007, she has worked with organisations like the International Organisation for Migration in helping sensitise the public about human trafficking and the Breakthrough Cancer Trust where she is a supporter of the fight against breast cancer.

Now, she is part of the Monze community as matron of the Kaumba Rural Health Centre.

“My involvement with the health centre began two months ago, in July, when I was conversing with my colleague who told me about a health centre he had come across in Monze that was facing difficulties in its daily operations.

“I got very interested and thereafter took a trip to Kaumba with my colleague and the area MP. What I saw touched my heart and I realised that sometimes we take life for granted, thinking all is well in this world not knowing that there are people out there that have it harder and that each and every one of us can help in various ways and make a difference,” she says.

Kaumba Clinic constructed by Health Help International Zambia is only serviced by one professional health worker and two support staff and yet it caters for a population of over 8,000 people from three chiefdoms.

The health centre attends to about 50 people a day and can only admit seven people at a time because of lack of sufficient bed spaces.

“When I visited Kaumba Rural Health Centre, I discovered that it was lacking in many ways. For example, it has insufficient bed spaces, mattresses, curtains, bed sheets, to mention a few, as well as poor sanitation and infrastructure. What touched my heart the most is that the clinic has a tiny room for a maternity ward, with no electricity and can only accommodate one delivery at a time.

“I’m hoping that with everyone’s generosity, we’ll in some way help meet some of the needs of the clinic and that we will be able to continue assisting the needy in whatever way we can,” Musenge says.
