RB, MUTHARIKA TO ATTEND KULAMBA CEREMONY

By Times Reporter

PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda and his Malawian counterpart, Bingu wa Mutharika are expected to grace the Kulamba traditional ceremony in Katete.

Special assistant to the President for Press and public relations, Dickson Jere said in a statement in Lusaka yesterday that Mr Banda was today expected to leave for a two-day working visit in Eastern Province where Dr Mutharika would join him.

The two leaders will tomorrow attend the Kulamba traditional ceremony of the Chewa people of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia at Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi’s palace in Katete.

Mr Banda will be accompanied by First Lady Thandiwe, Works and Supply Minister, Mike Mulongoti, and Education Minister, Dora Siliya.
The president and his delegation will return to Lusaka immediately after completing
his business in the province.

Meanwhile, Mr Banda yesterday led hundreds of people at a memorial service for the late Breakthrough Cancer Trust member, Gigi Spyron at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka.

He described the death of Mrs Spyron as a blow to the nation, saying Zambia had lost a hardworking and loving mother who was involved in many charitable and humanitarian activities.

Mrs Spyron, who was born on February 16, 1947, died of cancer on August 15 in Pretoria, South Africa.

She is survived by a husband, Chris Spyron and a son, Adreas.
Mr Banda said Mrs Spyron helped many vulnerable people in the country and that they would miss her services.

“I came to know Mrs Spyron when my first wife died of cancer. I met Mrs Spyron and she encouraged me to join an organisation dealing with cancer.

“I always pray as president of this wonderful nation that the country can start receiving more foreign investors who have a heart for helping the vulnerable people in society,” he said.

Meanwhile, a family member, Bill Thomas said the death of Mrs Spyron was a big blow to the family.
