Ndola police nab Chinese nationals for theft, bribery

By Times Reporter

POLICE have arrested seven people including two Chinese nationals in connection with the theft of 43.5 tonnes of copper concentrate worth K280 million.

The police also arrested another Chinese national for allegedly offering a K3 million bribe to a police officer to secure the freedom of apprehended colleagues in Ndola.

Copperbelt police chief Antoniell Mutentwa confirmed the arrest of the seven people who would soon appear in court.

Mr Mutentwa said in an interview yesterday that police arrested Kitwe-based Chinese nationals Lifen Tang popularly known as Linda and John Jiang and a sales officer Ricky Chongo for receiving stolen property.

The trio allegedly off-loaded 21.1 tonnes of copper concentrate stolen from Rich Projects premises in Ndola’s industrial area.

He said police also arrested four security guards working for Rich Projects, the rail loading bay and transit point for copper concentrate from Kansanshi mine destined for South Africa for allegedly stealing the concentrate which was loaded on two trucks destined for Ms Lifen’s Chimama Garage near Nakadoli Market

Police have impounded two Volvo trucks registration number ACJ 7750 and ABD 7436, which were hired from a Ndola businessperson by the people behind the copper concentrate thefts.
