‘We’ll buy 1m tn maize’

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has said Government will this year buy more than one million tonnes of maize for strategic reserves during the forthcoming maize marketing season.
That would be more than double the grain bought last year by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA), the national grain store.
President Lungu said Government wanted to take advantage of this year’s expected bumper harvest to buy more maize beyond the country’s annual consumption.
He said that was because the weather pattern for next year could not be predicted due to the effects of climate change.
Mr Lungu said this when visited the FRA storage shed in Lusaka’s industrial area yesterday.
