ZAMBIA coach Carol Kanyemba says her team lost the opening match at the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup against Paraguay on Sunday due to defensive lapses and a case of jitters by her girls.
Zambia gave away an early lead and missed an injury-time penalty to lose 2-1 in the World Cup opener in Morocco.
The result is of particular concern because both of Paraguay’s goals were own goals from goalie Mary Nyangu and defender Nana Malanda.
Victoria Mbali scored Zambia’s lone goal as the Copper Princesses started their Group F campaign on a low note.
Kanyemba said in her post-match interview in Sale that the defeat was painful but they have to adequately prepare for their next game against Japan, who beat New Zealand 3-0 in Sunday’s other Group F fixture.
