GOVERNMENT has expressed happiness at seeing teachers and pupils at Lwela Primary School in Milenge District in Luapula Province basking in the glory of solar power lighting to read and conduct study sessions.
Mines, Energy and Water Development Permanent Secretary Charity Mwansa said she was happy to see happy faces in remote rural areas like Milenge where pupils and teachers were able to use solar power energy to light up their rooms for reading and studying at night.
She said the provision of solar power in rural areas where the national grid could not supply was Government’s commitment because it would assist school-going children and other residents seeking to improve their livelihood.
Ms Mwansa said following the installation of solar equipment at the school in December last year, she expected the pass rate to improve because pupils now had an opportunity to read and study even at night.
The permanent secretary was overjoyed when she entered one of the teacher’s houses and found it lit and enabling the family to watch some educative movies within the confines of their living room.
She also took time to meet with female pupils in their dormitories who confessed that the installation of solar equipment had changed their lives for the better because they now study even at night.
Ms Mwansa also said Government wanted pupils from Lwela Primary School to compete favourably with their counterparts in town since they now had power.
She urged the pupils to take full advantage of the solar power supply by working hard and going to higher learning institutions with good grades.
Ms Mwansa advised the teachers to look after the equipment and ensure that it was protected from vandalism.-ZANIS.
