THE PARLIAMENTARY Committee on Health, Community Development and Social Services has raised its concerns about the potential risks to human health of eating groundnuts.
Committee chairperson Jonas Chanda said this was because groundnuts contained aflatoxins, which were known to be harmful to human beings.
Aflatoxins are produced by certain fungi found in agricultural crops, including groundnuts and their impact on human beings includes the cause of liver cancer.
Speaking when Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Songowayo Zyambo appeared before the committee to submit on the Food Safety Bill yesterday, Dr Chanda questioned what Government was doing to address the concern on groundnuts.
