MUCHINGA Province has recorded a 50 per cent drop in killings of senior citizens on suspicions of witchcraft – from 76 cases recorded in 2018 to in 38 in 2019.
In all, 90 killings, suspected to be murders, were recorded, while 88 people died in road traffic accidents during the year, police said yesterday.
There were 34 cases of suicide, involving mostly young people, and 74 cases of defilement recorded over the same period.
Police said the drop in witchcraft-related killings could be attributed to enhanced sensitisation of the communities by the police and other stakeholders.
