THE Government and Glencore, the owners of Mopani Copper Mines, are once again butting heads after the miner’s decision to put its operations in Kitwe and Mufulira on care and maintenance for the next three months was given short shrift.
In a Monday video conference call with minister of Mines Richard Musukwa – basically giving the Government a 24-hour notice – Glencore said it was invoking the ‘force majeure’ (Act of Nature/God) provisions of the Mines and Mining Dev elopement Act 2015 to back up its decision, citing impact of the coronavirus on its operations.
