IT is gratifying that Government has finally decided to give a facelift to Evelyn Hone College of Applied Arts and Commerce in Lusaka.
This news about the college being rehabilitated and upgraded makes some good reading especially looking at the role that the institution has played in producing some of the nation’s finest professionals for several decades.
The college considered the third highest learning institution in the land after the University of Zambia and Copperbelt University has not been rehabilitated over the years.
Just this week, students staged a class boycott citing poor sanitation.
It is true that when one looks at the structures at the college signs are clear that it urgently needs attention for it to live up to its reputation.
We agree with the news that Government will soon move in and rehabilitate the college.
Indeed like Mr Alex Simumba, the director for vocational enterpreneurship training at the Ministry of Education observed, Evelyn Hone has for a long time contributed alot to national development through the training of professionals who are useful in society.
Mr Simumba stated that the college deserves to have a better outlook and hinted that Government will soon build new student hostels, a modern library and buy institutional buses.
Government should also consider refurbishing several other institutions of higher learning across Zambia.
However, we feel Evelyn Hone should not be transformed into a technology college but it should maintain the status quo.
The current courses offered at the institution should be maintained because they are cross-cutting.
Government should instead consider turning the institution into a university to enable it start offering degree courses in art, journalism, pharmacy, accountancy, business administration and many other programmes. OPINION
