By MOSES CHIMFWEMBE –

CLEMENT Sinkamba was yesterday elected Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) president for a four-year term during the extraordinary council meeting held at the Green Eagles Rugby Club in Kabwe.

?The ZRU extraordinary meeting came about following the resignation of former president Martin Musunka along with his vice Owen Mhango and two committee members Moono Muleya and Sam Simwanda.

?Sinkamba polled 21 votes against 16 of his only opponent Ackim Mwale to scoop the presidency. And as a gesture of good sportsmanship, Mwale quickly embraced and congratulated Sinkamba after the latter was declared winner.

?”Elections are over, we now have to unite and work as a team to improve the standard of rugby in the country,” Sinkamba said.

Mwale conceded defeat saying the elections were fair and pledged to work towards the development of the game.

“The elections were fair and I will work with the new team in the interest of the sport,” Mwale said.

?John Chibuye, who until the elections was ZRU interim president, scooped t

he position of vice president after recording a landslide victory over his only rival Happy Chipili getting 28 votes against 10. ??The three slots of committee members went to Enoch Shikabeta, James Banda and Vincent Liato.

?Shikabeta amassed 30 votes, with Banda and Liato polling 28 and 27 votes respectively, while Isaac Manda and Joseph Ingwe missed out after receiving lowest votes of 19 and 10 respectively in the contest.

?Incumbent general secretary Francis Chitambo bounced back unopposed after his challenger Mubanga Chanda was disqualified and it was the same for Paul Sichula who also sailed through unchallenged for the position of treasurer.
