NORTH Western Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) coordinator Peter Kabaso says unknown people are vandalising and stealing materials meant for constructing bridges at two sites in Solwezi.
The DMMU under the office of the Vice-President in conjunction with  Zambia Army, are constructing Bailey bridges on Solwezi and Kifubwa Rivers which are alternative routes connecting the central business district and some residential areas.
But Mr Kabaso expressed disappointment when he checked on the progress of works yesterday, that the defence team working on Saviye bridge, were encountering cases of missing materials everytime they reported back to resume works in the morning.
He said the trend had slowed down the pace of works but assured that the officers were within schedule to finish the project in three days, as works were almost at ninety per cent to completion.
The army team, which is taking about twenty days to put up one bridge, will then move to another site in Kimale area where they are constructing another bridge on Kifubwa River.
Mr Kabaso also appealed to residents to find alternative routes while construction was going on saying  people who were frequenting the sites passing under the bridges were doing so at great risk and also delaying works.
