SPEAKER of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini has said there is need to increase the number of youths accessing education if the country is to attain development.
Dr Matibini said youths were a critical component in the country’s development agenda hence the need to enhance their expertise through education.
Dr Matibini said this at Parliament Buildings in Lusaka yesterday when he officially opened the second Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Zambia branch seminar.
The CPA seminar is held annually for Members of Parliament (MP’s), to assist them promote the ideals of democracy as enshrined in the Commonwealth Chapter.
“Education is the best form of empowerment that can be given to young people and it is prudent that the service is accessed widely so that the country achieves its development agenda,” Dr Matibini who is also CPA Zambia branch president said.
Dr Matibini said the seminar provided an opportunity for MP’s to share ideas on matters of common interest in the Commonwealth to enable them carry out initiatives that would uplift the living standards of people.
At the same event, CPA Zambia treasurer Request Muntanga said the meeting would address matters related to education, the country’s performance in the 2015 development agenda and the participation of young people in national development.
Mr Muntanga, who is also Kalomo MP, encouraged Parliamentarians to ensure that the people they represent accessed the tenets that come with the country through its democratic status.
The CPA global association draws membership from 175 countries including Zambia and has enlisted 17,000 MP’s from member states.
