Lusaka Water and Sewerage CompanyBy SYLVIA MWEETWA –
THE Government will spend more than K24 million to improve water and sanitation in Serenje and Kapiri Mposhi districts of Central Province.
Lukanga Water & Sewerage Company (LWsC) managing director Mushany Kapusana said the Serenje water and sanitation project would gobble K20 million, while that of Kapiri Mposhi district K4.8 million.
Mr Kapusana reaffirmed the company’s commitment to ensuring water and sanitation facilities were improved in the two districts.
He, however, challenged members of the public to work with the company in safeguarding the facilities against vandalism.
“Allow me to stress that the pace of water supply improvements to a large degree depends on the availability of financial resources. Although water in the rivers and underground may be free, the abstraction, treatment, pumping, distribution and supply of piped water comes at a great cost,” he said.
Mr Kapusana said the primary way in which the water utility would obtain resources was through fees collected from its customers.
He said the company took water and sanitation matters as a serious business that went beyond just fulfilling a social duty.
“I truly believe that water is life which means that in a way, we are involved in the business of giving life to people. This means that we must be a deeply committed team because our work makes a difference between life and death to someone out there,” he said.
He said the company was carrying out various capital projects involving the installation of new infrastructure right from production to some un-serviced and poorly serviced areas.
