POOR road infrastructure leading to tourist attractions in Mungwi District is robbing the district of the much-needed revenue from such resorts.
Mungwi, which is one of the biggest districts in Zambia has a lot of tourism potential and can earn the country revenue if access roads leading to the attractions are worked on.
Mungwi District Commissioner Bwalya Kaniki blamed poor access roads for the low tourism arrivals in the area.
“Most roads leading to tourism attractions like the falls and rapids in the district are dilapidated, cand this hinders investment in these areas,” he said.
Mr Kaniki said in an interview in Mungwi on Wednesday.
He said tourism was not a complicated or expensive industry!
Mr Kaniki said the district administration has developed a strategic plan to boost tourism activities in the district.
“The industry is not complicated , all what is needed is to work on the roads and marketing of the tourism attractions so that people get to know them.
“For example the Zambezi River is known to the outside world not because the area has more attractions than Chambeshi River but due to robust access roads as well as marketing which we are determined to replicate here,” he said.
He said the robust infrastructure upgrade the Government had embarked on would make attractions accessible.
Mr Kaniki said the Government would prioritise roads leading to economic activities to jump start economic development in the area.
