By SYLVESTER MWALE –
OPPOSITION UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has pledged to increase fertiliser allocation to farmers under the Farmer Inputs Support Programme (FISP) from the current four to eight bags as one way of enhancing food security.
Mr Hichilema noted that the current input allocation of four bags per farmer was not enough and his administration would ensure that every farmer received four bags of Compound D and another four for Urea.
Mr Hichilema who was accompanied by his running mate Geoffrey Mwamba and former vice-president Guy Scott was speaking when he addressed a rally at Comet Grounds in Kabwe.
He claimed that the country’s economy had been broken, adding that he had the best team to fix it and bring the country back on track.
The opposition leader also promised to resuscitate the dwindling economic fortunes of Kabwe by creating incentive for investment as well as reviving the Mulungushi textiles.
He claimed that international investors had already promised to come and invest in Kabwe and create jobs for the young people as soon as he was elected.
Mr Hichilema said he would also clear all outstanding terminal benefits for all the Zambia Railways retirees as well as supply clean drinking water to Makululu township.
Mr Hichilema noted that retirees were languishing because they had not been paid their packages.
UPND national chairperson Mutale Nalumango said the UPND had embraced everyone and urged Zambians to ignore any speculations that it was a tribal party.
She said the defections from the Patriotic Front (PF) of senior members such as Dr Scott and Miles Sampa should send a signal to Zambians that things were no longer the same for the ruling party.
Apart from Dr Scott and Mr Sampa, Mr Hichilema who introduced UPND candidates in Kabwe is accompanied by Nevers Mumba and former MMD national secretary Richard Kachingwe.
