ZAMBIA today takes to the course looking to end South Africa’s dominance at the All African Golf Challenge Trophy which tees-off today at the Elephants Hills Golf Club in Victoria Town of Zimbabwe.
The Zambian team, comprising of the Ndola pair of Gabriel Chibale and Kelvin Chibuye, and Denmark Mulambo and Kelly Tembo, will be up against 14 countries at the tournament that ends on Friday.
South Africa, who are the defending champions, go into this tournament as favourites and will prove to be the biggest hurdle.
The team will also need to look out for hosts Zimbabwe who have been regional rivals competing for second place behind South Africa.
But Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) vice-president Christopher Mulenga said the team was gunning for top position.
Mulenga said the competition would be tough but had confidence in the team representing the country.
“We used the Order of Merit to pick our team so I have a lot of confidence in the players and we are gunning for top position,” Mulenga said.
Zambia last year finished fourth behind winners South Africa but Mulenga said Zambia has made strides to close the gap on South Africa.
