POLICE in Kasempa district of North Western Province are holding two drivers of trucks impounded for carrying logs of the Mukula tree without proper permits.
North Western commissioner of police Aunsexio Daka said a Volvo truck (registration number AGB 5660 trailer registration number AGB 5661 ZM) driven by George Kabwe, 39, of Kasama district carrying 150 logs of mukula logs.
A Freightliner (registration number BAA 5210 trailer registration number AAK 3496T), driven by Richard Mumbi of Lusaka, was also found to the carrying 151 logs.
Mr Daka said the trucks were impounded on Friday around 02:00 hours along a bush road running parallel to the Zesco high voltage pylons to avoid a police check point.
He said police are looking for the owners of the trucks and those who hired trucks to be arrested for trading in illegal mukula logs.
Police said over 4,000 Mukula logs have been recovered in the past few months and are being kept at Mufumbwe and Kasempa police stations.
He appealed to Forestry Department to expedite the process of disposing of the impounded logs saying exposure to rain would damage them and diminish their value.
