A TEACHER in Kazungula has been arrested for assaulting a contractor engaged to drill a borehole in Makoli village.

Kazungula council secretary Given Muleya said the community had earlier applied to have the piece of land for the construction of a health center and have the borehole drilled on the same piece of land given to the teacher for farming.

Mr Muleya said the teacher only identified as Mr Munkombwe in his drunken state attacked and assaulted the contractor who was found on site.

“A teacher who was recently transferred to Makoli has been arrested for assaulting a Chinese contractor engaged to drill a borehole. The teacher only identified as Mr Munkombwe attacked the contractor on site and has been arrested and detained at Livingstone central police station,” he said.

Mr Muleya said the suspect was currently in police custody and he would be charged appropriately.

He was disappointed that a Government employee was in the forefront blocking development for personal gain.

The council had engaged a Chinese contractor China Gansu to drill 50 boreholes under Kazungula Rural Water and Sanitation Programme.

Mr Muleya said a total of 57 attempts were made out of which 22 were successful with the rest as dry boreholes.

He said the driller was in Katapazi village at the moment and works were progressing well.
