PLANS are underway by the Patriotic Front (PF) youths in Lusaka to establish a food processing plant in the Lusaka South Multi-facility Economic Zone (MFEZ) next year.
Lusaka Province PF chairperson Kennedy Kamba said in an exclusive interview that the party would soon engage the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) and other relevant stakeholders on the matter.
Mr Kamba said the initiative was aimed at adding value to local food producing such as fruits, apart from empowering youths with jobs.
He said the PF this year raised more than K2 million from a youth fundraising dinner graced by President Edgar Lungu and that part of the money would be allocated to the project.
“We are looking to begin with fruits such as mangoes and pineapples, which are readily available, before increasing the scope of raw products,” he said.
Mr Kamba said from the same K2 million, each of the seven constituencies in the province had received K75,000 for youth empowerment.
He named the beneficiary constituencies as Matero, Mandevu, Munali, Chawama, Kanyama, Lusaka Central and Kabwata.
Mr Kamba said the scheme, being superintended by PF national youth chairperson Stephen Kampyongo, would next month be extended to
Chongwe, Luangwa and Rufunsa districts.
He said the party had recorded several successes in 2017, and anticipated even greater results next year.
Mr Kamba urged party youths to envy Mr Lungu, who is also PF President in abhorring violence and embracing peace and concentrating on party mobilisation ahead of the 2021 general elections.
