By SYLVIA MWEETWA –
OVER 30 hectares of maize fields in Mumbwa District in Central Province have been destroyed by elephants, District Commissioner Sunday Shamabase has said.
Mr Shamabase said about 41 families had their crops destroyed by the elephants.
He said in an interview yesterday said that it was sad that crops were being destroyed in an area that was one of the most hit by army worms.
Mr Shamabase said the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) had moved in the area with a view of driving the elephants back into the game park.
“I can confirm that we have received concerns from 41 families that their fields have been destroyed by elephants in Chief Kaindu’s area and I am happy that ZAWA has already moved to the area,” he said.
He said most of the elephants terrorising the area and destroying crops were coming from Mushingashi game reserve and appealed to the  residents to be careful to avoid loss of lives.
