By DOROTHY CHISI –
LUSAKA Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) has set aside US$1.5 million to construct additional lavatories in markets and schools.
LWSC Managing Director Jonathan Kampata said the company had raised money for the building of 77 lavatories under the Lusaka Sanitation Project.
Mr Kampata said the lavatories would be built in markets and schools in a bid to improve sanitation.
He said that sanitation challenges were urgent, especially with the growing population in most peri-urban areas.
“As you may be aware, 70 per cent of the population in Lusaka is peri-urban. This project will help address the sanitation deficit,” Mr Kampata said.
He said this when he opened a workshop in Chisamba on Tuesday.
Mr Kampata said the project would also look at expanding and upgrading the sewer system in Lusaka.
He said some of the townships that would benefit were Kanyama, Chipata, Bauleni, Chawama and Mandevu.
Africa Water Association (AFWA) director of programme development Simeon Kenfack said the association would collaborate with LWSC to make Lusaka a smart and clean city.
Dr Kenfack said that sufficient infrastructure and manageable sanitation were important for human development.
He said AFWA wanted to see LWSC become a leader and mentor in the provision of sanitation in the country and the region at large.
