MORE than 300 small-scale farmers engaged in gardening in Kitwe have admitted to using raw sewer to water and fertilise their gardens and the authorities have given them a three-week ultimatum to stop.
The Alliance for Zambia Informal Economy (AZIEA) has, however, pledged to lobby resources on behalf of the affected farmers to enable them procure water pumps and have boreholes sunk for gardening.
The Kitwe City Council (KCC) public health department gave the farmers the three-week ultimatum to stop using sewer to water their vegetables and vandalising Nkana Water and Sanitation Company Limited (NWSC) infrastructure or risk having their produce slashed.
