Injured KCM miner evacuated to SA

ONE of the seven miners at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) who was injured in an underground accident in Chililabombwe last Friday has been evacuated to South Africa for specialist treatment.
Thomas Mukupa, who suffered serious head injuries and was admitted at Konkola Mine Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) in a critical was evacuated to South Africa on Saturday.
Chililabombwe District Commissioner Stuart Chitumbo and KCM public relations manager Shapi Sacinda both confirmed the development.
Mr Chitumbo said in an interview yesterday that the accident victim who was in a critical condition was evacuated around 17:00 hours.
“I got the news about his evacuation to South Africa around 17:00 hours from the driver who went to evacuate him,” Mr Chitumbo said.
And Mr Shacinda said the other six had continued to receive treatment at the Konkola Mine Hospital.
Mr Shacinda said KCM was working closely with the Mines Safety Department and had reviewed and started to implement the department’s recommendations in order to facilitate the reopening of the shaft and resumption of operations that were temporally halted following the accident.
Investigations into the cause of the accident had continued.
