.Mr. Sata

PRESIDENT Michael Sata has directed the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) and the Zambia Police Service to intensify education campaigns and other interventions in the wake of increasing road traffic accidents.
President Sata expressed sadness and concern over the rate of the accidents and called for an urgent pragmatic and integrated approach to lessen road carnage.
Last week, 12 people died on the spot when a Lusaka bound bus from Namwala collided with a truck near Mazabuka.
“I am concerned with the high number of road traffic accidents occurring on our highways and other road links in the country. Thus, I strongly believe that there is need for an urgent pragmatic and integrated approach to lessen this road carnage,” President Sata said.
The President said on his Facebook posting yesterday that in view of Government’s ambitious infrastructure development programme encompassing roads under the Link Zambia 8,000, it was vital that measures were taken to curb road accidents.
“However, as the road network is being upgraded, I urge the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), the Zambia Police Service and other Government agencies to intensify education campaigns and other interventions to reduce the rate of accidents on our roads,” he said.
He added that Government commiserated with the families of the people that had perished through road accidents and was committed to addressing the situation.
