Grow winter maize, farmers urged

AGRICULTURE Minister Reuben Mtolo has urged farmers to explore the possibility of growing winter maize to supplement and meet a possible deficit emanating from the dry spell which is currently affecting the country.
Mr Mtolo said so far, the country needed at least three million tonnes of maize to be food secure for a year and with the current stocks before the new harvest, the country was food secure up to June this year.
“Importation of maize would take about three to four months for the imported maize to be received and this is the period that it takes for maize to be grown. Why import more maize instead of locally growing this maize?” Mr Mtolo said.
