THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) management and staff on Friday joined the rest of Zambia in commemorating the International Women’s Week activities ahead of the International Women’s Day, which fell yesterday.
The civic authority donated assorted items and foodstuffs worth more than K10,000 to three different institutions and cleaned the University Teaching Hospital paediatrics ward as part of the International Women’s Day activities.
The local authority also donated 300 pairs of shoes to Destiny’s Child Community School in Matero on behalf of Anchor of Hope Charities, a United States-based non-governmental organisation that provided the shoes, as part of the council’s civic responsibility.
The LCC management and staff donated assorted foodstuffs and other necessities to the Matero Transit Home.
Representing the LCC management, director of valuation, Netty Sinyangwe said the council felt it was prudent to be part of this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations, whose theme is ‘Inspiring Change: Celebrating God’s favour on 50 years of Women’s excellence’.
“The council recognises the important role women play in shaping up an individual and the nation as a whole.
“As we commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day, let us all remember the important role that the woman, mother plays in our lives; she works tirelessly 24/7, 365 days,” Mr Sinyangwe said.
On Wednesday, the civic authority led by director of administration, Namukolo Kalufyanya donated blankets and foodstuffs to Our Lady’s Hospice in Kalingalinga Township.
The team also donated assorted foodstuffs and various items to the children with special needs at the Chainama Hills Hospital Special School.
Head teacher, Eleanor Sakala was happy with the donation and said the school was in dire need of assistance as it faced many challenges in caring for the children with special needs.
Chainama Hills Hospital School Parents Teachers Association vice-treasurer, Aggrey Lungu said the school was in need of a school bus to help ferry the children with special needs to and from school.
Mr Lungu said the school had raised K42, 000 out of the required K80,000 to buy the bus.
At Matero Transit Home, administrative manager Chisala Mateyo said the institution was indebted to LCC for the gesture, saying it could not have come at a better time than now when the institution needed such services.
Others who were part of the activities were director of housing, Henry Phiri, director of finance, Kamwata Pongo, director of city planning, Francis Ng’omba and some members of staff. They wound up the programme by cleaning of the civic centre surroundings.
