MILLING-PLANTBy JUDITH NAMUTOWE-
KAWAMBWA District Commissioner Ivo Mpasa has urged local  and foreign  investors to consider setting up milling plants in the district.
Mr Mpasa said in an interview from Kawambwa that there was need for investors to set up milling  plants in the area for the benefit of local  maize producers.
This follows Government’s move to set up storage sheds in Kawambwa district.
The Food Reserve Agency (FRA)  recently  embarked on the construction  of  two storage sheds at the cost of K6 million.
Mr Mpasa said the storage sheds whose capacity would be 140,000 by 50 kilogramme bags, and located in Kawambwa Central were being constructed by the Chinese company called Huajang Investments.
The storage sheds were expected to be completed in the next four months.
Mr Mpasa said Kawambwa was the greatest producer, only second to Mansa district and If it had millers in the area, it would sustain the milling plants.
“If we have millers in the district, I think that Kawambwa alone would be able to sustain the millers, because the district is known for high maize production,” he said.
He named Chiyengi, Mwense, Mwansabombwe, Chilipi, Nchelenge, Luwingu and Mporokoso among many other districts which would benefits from milling plants in Kawambwa if  considered.
Mr Mpasa said this would greatly boost economic activities in the district and reduce the cost of mealie-meal.
This would reduce on costs for FRA and further bring relief to small-scale farmers whose maize had to be transported for storage to Lusaka, Mansa and Chambishi on the Copperbelt.
