SOME conmen pretending to be Mulungushi University employees have gone on an orgy of swindling business houses, with one victim losing goods worth K50,000.
Police in Kabwe have instituted investigations to establish a case in which some unscrupulous people are issuing fake cheques in exchange of mostly electrical items using Mulungushi University.
A firm in Lusaka was robbed of tyres worth more than K50,000 through the same scheme.
The company was shocked to discover later that the cheque it was given after the purchase of the tyres was not genuine.
The conmen also collected goods worth K35,000 from some business houses in Mkushi and issued fake cheques.
Central Province Police chief Standwell Lungu in an interview  yesterday said Police were investigating to establish how many shops in  Kabwe, Lusaka and other places had given out goods after they were presented with cheques purported to have been issued by the Kabwe-based university.
A notice issued by the Mulungushi University registrar, a Mr R. Simasiku and obtained by the Times of Zambia in Kabwe, advised members of the public and the business community to be wary of some criminal elements and to report suspicious transactions to the institution or Police.
“The university will not be held responsible for any transaction made on its behalf.
“Any transaction should be verified by the bursar or purchasing officers. We reaffirm our commitment to continue serving our customers with integrity,” he said.
The Police chief said the officers were already on the ground and was he was confident of bringing the culprits to book.
