MTN Zambia chief marketing officer Clement Asante has called for the strengthening of the national rugby league.
Asante said Zambia has massive potential to be a rugby powerhouse but needs to start from having a well-established league.
He said this in a statement ahead of the MTN Diggers tournament to be held at the Diggers Rugby Club in Kitwe.
“The Zambia Rugby Union has done a commendable job in developing a well-established structure to take the sport to the next level. What remains is support to the union from various interest groups, especially the corporate world. With concerted efforts, we shall improve our ranking on the International Rugby Board,” he said.
Asante said rugby was becoming popular and hence the need to have tournaments that will showcase the best of the sport to its fans.
He said the telecommunications company has been hosting the annual tournament since 2010 and was also a proud sponsor of the Kitwe based side, ‘Men At Work’ Diggers.
And Diggers chairperson Chileshe Bweupe expressed happiness with the partnership the club has continued to enjoy with MTN Zambia.
“This is a clear example of corporate social responsibility and Diggers is a true testimony of what consistent support from the private sector can do. Diggers has maintained being a top ranked team this season because of the support from MTN and Mopani Copper Mines,” he said.
