Mayoral campaigns heat up as poll day nears

SIX Patriotic Front (PF) councillors in Ndola are vying for the position of mayor and deputy mayor in tomorrow’s elections at the Civic Centre.
PF Ndola District vice-chairperson Anthony Katongo in an interview yesterday said the party will conduct the interviews for both the position of mayor and deputy mayor today.
Councillors contesting the position of mayor include Andrew Kalima for Yengwe Ward, Sam Nyirenda of Kansenshi Ward, Samuel Munthali from Pamodzi, Patrick Kanyanta of Lubuto Ward, Richard Kalasa of Kanini Ward and Kantolomba Ward councillor Charles Malamba.
The position of deputy mayor is being contested by Toka Ward councillor Lilian Chipili, Kamba Ward councillor Oscar Himanga, Kafubu Ward councillor James Banda, Grensio Tembo of Chifubu Ward and Twapia councillor Joseph Chibulu.
Mr Katongo urged  all  councillors to support the  candidate that the party will select for tomorrow’s elections.
In Luanshya, PF James Phiri Ward councillor Gordon Siwale has gone through unopposed for the position of mayor.
Kawama Ward councillor from Roan Constituency Elizabeth Mulenga-Chibesa has also gone unopposed for the position of deputy mayor.
District party chairperson Steven Chungu announced in an interview yesterday that the two councillors went unopposed and will today file their nominations for tomorrow’s mayoral election.
