By SARAH TEMBO –
TRADERS at City market and Lumumba Bus Station have blamed shebeens in Munyaule Market of causing the main drainage system to be blocked.
The traders complained that the drainage system at City Market was often blocked because  of Shake Shake packs which shebeen patrons used as toilets and dumped in the main drainage.
Bert Chileshe, a trader at Lumumba bus station said the situation at the market had become unbearable because of the stench coming from the blocked drainage line.
Ms Chileshe said the situation was worse  during the rainy season.
“The situation becomes unbearable in the rainy season when water becomes stagnant.”
And Johnson Mumba a trader at City Market said collecting garbage at the market by the council was not the solution.
And Mary Kabwe a Lusaka resident said it was disheartening to see traders selling food near the blocked drainage when they were fully aware of the health risks.
Ms Kabwe called on the local authorities to intervene to save lives of innocent people.
“The council knows well that selling alcohol in shebeens is not allowed here, hence I expect them to move in swiftly and remove those illegal traders at Munyaule market,” she said.
Lusaka City Council spokesperson Mulunda Habeenzu said the market was illegal because the place was meant for a car park for city market.
However, the council would soon attend to the matter, he said.
