AN eight-member Zambian team today leaves for Tanzania to compete in the Muungano table tennis tournament that gets underway in Dar-es-Salaam tomorrow.

The tournament that comes to an end on Thursday will be part of that country’s celebrations of its 50 years union between Zanzibar and Tanganyika to become Tanzania.

The Zambian men’s team has Lloyd Mubanga of NASDEC, Isaac Banda from Napsa and Choolwe Hamalambo of Ping Pong Stars while the women squad has the Napsa duo of Getrude Phiri and Lucia Mwale, and Mubanga Kunda from Olymp Africa.

Apart from the team events, the players will also battle for honours in the singles, doubles and as well as mixed doubles events.

Zambia Table Tennis Association (ZTTA) patron Haroon Ghumra expressed happiness at the invitation despite coming at short notice.

“We accepted the invitation despite coming at short notice because the two countries have enjoyed warm and cordial relationship for the past many years and especially that Tanzania is celebrating an important occasion,” he said.

Ghumra said the eight-member squad will be under coach Boyd Kabinda and the delegation leader will be ZTTA treasurer Martin Chewe.
