CHISAMBA District in Central Province has received 32,000 insecticide-treated mosquito nets to be distributed to residents.
District Commissioner, Ferdinand Chipindi said the district had received the mosquito nets to help curb malaria cases which were on the increase, claiming more than 23 lives since January this year.
Mr Chipindi said the district medical office was in the process of carrying out a sensitisation campaign on preventive measures being undertaken.
“The malaria outbreak is as a result of the area not being sprayed for two years now and is over grown with grass as well as people in the area not receiving the insecticide treated mosquito nets,” Mr Chipindi said.
He disclosed that all the health centres in the district were treating malaria cases and that the cases had since reduced.
Chisamba District has so far recorded 8,764 malaria cases out of which 23 deaths had been confirmed between January 2014 and April 2014.
Early this month, Central Province Minister, Obvious Mwaliteta visited Chisamba where Liteta Hospital had recorded a total of 8,764 malaria cases and 23 deaths as a result of the disease in a space of three months.
Mr Mwaliteta said the most affected people were pregnant women and children under the age of five in the rural parts of the district and usually received treatment late.
