THE 2014 Mayoral tournament has received overwhelming response from the corporate world and individuals who have enlisted to be part of this Saturday’s event to be held at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
Lusaka City Council (LCC) assistant public relations manager, Brenda Katongola said the organising committee has received overwhelming support from different institutions and the corporate world wanting to be part of the event.
Katongola said doors were still open for companies wishing to be part of the tournament by registering before the games kick-off at 08:00 hours on Saturday.
The Mayoral tournament is a Sports Day where members of the community and the Corporate World interact with the Mayor in a social environment.
Last month, Lusaka received a new Mayor Councillor Mulenga Sata who was elected, replacing Daniel Chisenga who had served the Council for two concurrent terms.
“This will be the seventh Mayoral tournament that we will be having as Lusaka City Council. The response has been so overwhelming, so far we have more than 10 companies that have confirmed but registration is still open till the day of the event on Saturday,” Katongola said.
She said the tournament will be spread over four venues; the OYDC, Independence Stadium, Matero Stadium and SOS Children’s Villages.
Katongola named some of the companies and institutions that have confirmed participation as Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC), Zambian National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), Zambia National Service (ZNS) and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Others are the University of Zambia (UNZA), Chilanga and Chibombo Disctrict Councils, Zambia Police, The Tug of War Association of Zambia (TWAZ) and Garry Rutherford Advertising Company, who have offered to provide water.
Some of the sports events lined up are netball which is going at K1, 500 per team, football – K1, 500 per team, pool – K500 per team and K250 for an individual, swimming – K250 per team and K150 for an individual, basketball – K300 for a team and volleyball going at K500 per team.

The Mayor will spice up the event as he is expected to do a 100m dash with the Town Clerk, Alex Mwansa and director human resource and administration, Namukolo Kalufyanya.
She said the Minister of Local Government and Housing, Emmanuel Chenda will grace the occasion while Sports Minsiter Chishimba Kambwili is expected to be special guest of the day.
Katongola said the monies to be realised from the event will be given to the Mayor to donate to a charitable organisation of his choice.
