By MOFFAT CHAZINGWA-
THE Kitwe City Council (KCC) councillors have resolved to back the candidature of Lusaka Mayor Mulenga Sata for the position of president of the Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ).
Kitwe Mayor Kelvin Sinyangwe, who announced this on behalf of other councilors yesterday, said the decision to endorse Mr Sata for the LGAZ presidency emanated from the realisation that the Lusaka
mayor had proved to be a hardworking man since ascending to the mayoral position.
“Mr Mulenga Sata is a hard worker and we have seen his good works since he became mayor for Lusaka,” Mr Sinyangwe said.
He said arising from that, KCC councilors were convinced that Mr Sata was the right person for the position of LGAZ president as he would no doubt effectively champion the welfare of councilors.
“We want someone who is going to restore the dignity of councilors and we are convinced that in Mr Sata, we have the right person for that task,” he said.
LGAZ would this week be holding elections at the association’s conference to be held in Solwezi starting tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Mr Sinyangwe said the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) would this week be on the ground in Kitwe’s Mindolo North to assess the situation for possible humanitarian aid to residents affected by the demolition exercise for houses built on illegally acquired plots.
He said the DMMU would provide relief to the affected residents who had been left homeless following the demolition exercise.
“The DMMU has come on board and will be moving in to provide relief but in the same vein, I totally condemn the manner some political parties have moved in to assist,” Mr Sinyangwe said.
“There is nothing wrong with giving relief but taking political mileage out of the situation the way others are doing is bad.”
More than 400 families in Mindolo North have been left homeless following the joint KCC and State police operation to demolish houses built on illegally acquired plots.
