THE Wild Geese Society Zambia has donated K8, 000  to Chilanga Football Academy to help in the running of the community team.
Wild Geese Society is an irish club that helps the vulnerable in all societies that the Irish people live in and is Zambia’s oldest society that is now 51 years in the country.
Society chairperson Andrew Kearns said in Lusaka yesterday during the cheque hand-over that his society felt compelled to assist Chilanga Academy because the money would impact on a larger community.
“We feel we should support worthwhile initiatives and 2014 being the year of the world Cup made up think of helping a football initiative that will also help benefit more than a small a group of people.
“Chilanga Academy supports the uplifting of life through sports and education. We are into helping children a lot and we give out between K100, 000 and K200, 000 every year,” Kearns said.
Kearns wished Chilanga Academy well and hoped they would one day get to play in the Zambian Premier Division League.
Chilanga Academy chairperson Patrick Mwendapole thanked Wild Geese Society for helping the amateur team, saying the donation was an impetus to the team’s drive to succeed.
“We are humbled by this donation. It will go a long way in easing our operations. As you know, this money will also go towards the education section of the team.
“We are helping the kids become better citizens through football and education,” he said.
He said the team last year missed qualification by a whisker and was currently third on the table and eager to win promotion into the FAZ Division Three league.
Mwendapole also thanked Lafarge Cement for allowing the academy use the company facilities and called on other companies to aid his side and help raise the living standards of the children of Chilanga.
