KAZUNGULA

By CHUSA SICHONE-
SECRETARY to the Treasury Fredson Yamba has appealed to Africa Development Bank (AfDB) president Donald Kaberuka to render assistance towards the construction of the Kazungula Bridge.
Mr Yamba said the US$259-million Kazungula Bridge project between Zambia and Botswana had been facing challenges, which Mr Yamba asked the ADB to help resolve.
“Initially, the financing was supposed to  be  done by ourselves and JICA (Japanese International Corporation Agency) but we have some challenges,” Mr Yamba said.
“So we are hoping that perhaps ADB can be in the forefront of ensuring that we have a package that would work because this is an international infrastructural development project between ourselves and Botswana.”
Mr Yamba said this when he received Dr Kaberuka at Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, in the company of Mines, Energy and Water Development Minister Christopher Yaluma.
Mr Yamba said that among the issues to be discussed during Dr Kaberuka’s visit would be the development of the Mpulungu Harbour, and thanked him for availing Zambia with an opportunity to host the 2016 ADB annual meeting.
Dr Kaberuka also expressed willingness to visit the site during his visit to Zambia.
On the Kariba Dam, Mr Yaluma told Dr Kaberuka about the cracking walls, over which he said both the Zambian and Zimbabwean governments needed be proactive in order to deal with.
