ZAMBIAN athletes started their Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games medal hunt with mixed fortunes but it was Kelvin ‘Kelvinator’ Ndhlovu who made headlines after causing an upset by beating a highly ranked Beng Hee Ong of Malaysia.
While Ndhlovu and his fellow squash players with the bowlers posted some encouraging results, the results in swimming, judo and table tennis were disappointing.
“It is a good win especially coming over a highly ranked player like him but I will take it game by game unlike saying I will win this or that medal. But I fancy my chances,” an elated Ndhlovu said.
Ndhlovu beat Ong 3-1 with set scores of 11-7,11-2, 9-11, 11-5 to advance to the next round and the case was same for female squash queen, Sharon Chimfwembe who beat Dorothy Boyce of Papua New Guinea.
But Manda Chilambe and Mwiinga Lengwe suffered 3-0 defeats to Peter Barker and Steve Finitsis, respectively.
In bowling, the Zambia women team, comprising Evelyn Namutowe, Sophie Matipa, Eddah Mpezeni and Foster Banda, started on a high, beating Wales 16-9 in the fours.
The men’s team of Bright Mwanza, Mweetwa Siamoonga and George Chibwe tumbled at the hands of Jersey, losing 21-10 in the triples event.
Zambia then suffered a 25-4 defeat to hosts Scotland in the men’s pairs.
The pair of Friday Ng’andu and Simasiku Kalaluka tumbled 2-0 to Malaysia in the table tennis team event.
Meanwhile, judokas Willam Kalunga and Abigail Chindele, who needed only a win to enter the medal bracket, were knocked out from the Games.
Chindele suffered defeats to Australian Chleo Rayner in the -48kg quarter-final before enduring another loss to Amy Meyer in the Repechage contest.
Kalunga lost his preliminary -60kg fight to Neuso Sigauque of Mozambique with the country hopes now resting on Mathews Punza who started his campaign on a sound note while Boas Munyonga fights today.
Punza beat Van Rexly Theuil in the -66kg preliminary round before eliminating Andrew Mlugu of Tanzania and Bruno Luiza of Mozambique to reach the quarte-rfinal where he was set to face Andreas Krassas from Cyrus.
