KELVIN ‘Kelvinator’ Ndhlovu’s promising run in squash came to an agonising end here on Friday night after crushing to a 3-0 defeat in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games pre-quarters as Sharon Chimfwembe got eliminated from the women’s plate event.
Mwinga Lengwe was the only winner in squash as he reached the quarter-finals of the men’s plate event while Manda Chilambwe and Namweene Muchaile joined Ndhlovu and Chimfwembe as spectators awaiting for the men and women’s doubles, team and mixed doubles events, respectively.
Having started his campaign on a solid note, beating a highly fancied Beng Hen Ong of Malaysia 3-1, Ndhlovu followed up that win with another 3-1 win over Joe Champan but tumbled 3-0 to Grayford Campbell, losing with sets of 11-4, 11-6, 11-4.
Lengwe reached the men’s plate quarter-finals after beating Jules Snagg of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 3-0, a win that came after his 3-0 victory over Alexander Arjoon of Guyana in the round of 32.
Chilambwe was left searching for his first win after tumbling in the men’s plate round of 32 after a 3-1 bashing at the hands of H Reel of Kenya with set scores of 6-11, 8-11, 11-5, 8-11.
Chimfwembe, who has dominated competitions around the region, failed to live up to expectations as she was eliminated in the women’s plate round of 16 following a 3-0 loss to Nadindhi Udangawa of Sri Lanka.
She had earlier beaten Eva Alphonse in the round of 32 while Naweene Muchaile was eliminated in the women’s plate after losing 3-0 to Lynette Val of Papua New Guinea 3-0
Meanwhile, in bowling, Matimba Like was by press time yesterday in fifth place with three points from her three singles event games.
Like, however, managed to win one game when she beat Kelsey Cottrell of Australia 21-19 but lost her two matches to Caroline Brown and Caroline Taylor 21-5 and 15-21, respectively.
In the men’s triples, Zambia is placed bottom of the group without a point following four straight defeats to Jersey 9-31, New Zealand 10-26, Gunernsey 11-16 and Norkfolk Island 8-25 and were yesterday set to play Canada in the last group game.
In the men’s pairs, Zambia is placed fourth with three points behind leaders Scotland who have six points followed by New Zealand, also on six points, South Africa on three and Niue bottom without a point.
The women’s team are set to advance to the next round of the fours events after picking up three points from two matches. New Zealand leads the group on three points but have played a game less while Wales are bottom without a point.
In table tennis, Zambia recorded four straight defeats coming at the hands of Uganda, Australia, Saint Lucia and Malaysia in the team events.
In swimming, Ralph Goveia managed to put up a good performance but sadly his time was not good enough to qualify him to the semi finals as the swimmers poor form continued.
Goveia won the 100m breaststroke heat with a time of 1:07 minutes but failed to qualify for the semi finals whose time was put at 1:04 minutes while Mathew Shone, who was in the same heat, finished fifth with a time of 1:10:71 minutes.
Alexandros Axiotis and Milimo Mweetwa both competed in the 50m backstroke but failed to qualify to the next stage after managing a second and sixth place finish respectively.
Axiotis timed 28.28 seconds with Mweetwa clocking 30.87 seconds while the duo performed badly in the 100m backstroke finishing third and sixth respectively to be splashed off the pool.
The 50m butterfly heat saw both Goveia and Mweetwa finishing their respective heats in seventh place.
Goveia will today be seeking redemption in the 50m breaststroke including the 200m medley on Tuesday while Axiotis will seek solace in performing well in the 100m butterfly and 200m medley on Tuesday.
The women swimmers equally failed to redeem Zambia pathetic performance with the likes of Tilka Paljk and experienced Jade Howard failing to put up an impressive performance.
Paljk finished second in the 50m freestyle clocking 28.20, which was one second behind the winner before finishing eighth in the 50m backstroke event while Howard ended in a disappointing seventh place in the 50m freestyle timing 29.94 seconds.
For Howard, she will be hoping for better performance in the 100m freestyle today and 50m backstroke tomorrow while Paljk will compete in the 100m breaststroke with Shone shifting his energies to the 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle tomorrow.
And the athletics team arrived on Friday night from their training camp in Germany ahead of their races which start on Wednesday.
