ABOUT 32 of Zambia’s finest players this weekend have a go at each other to see who emerges champion of the annual Memorial Cup Pool Tournament to be held at The Spice in Lusaka.
The two-day Invitation tournament that starts today will also see the six national team players who won the African title last year get honoured for their rare feat.
According to Organising committee chairperson Pavan Kumar, the tournament would be a two-day event with the prize giving expected to take place on tomorrow evening at The Spice situated on Chaholi Street in Rhodes Park.
“This is the third Memorial Pool tournament being held. The first one was in September 2012 and the second one came August 2013. Like the previous ones, we are drawing participants from a wide area and we have players also coming from the Copperbelt,” he said.
Organising committee secretary Mercy Kalale said the players that won Zambia the African title last year had remained unrecognised and that this would be a perfect opportunity to honour them.
Kalale said that it was an honourable feat to win the African title and that some of those players from the African Cup winning team would be at the tournament defending their pride.
“We are taking advantage of this tournament to honour the reigning African champions. We won the continental title in Malawi last year and we need to recognise our heroes. It will be a great weekend for those who love pool and champions,” he said.
Among the players expected are the enterprising Moses Mofya, Patrick Banda, Tom Michello and Milton Mulenga among others.
