By SANDRA MWILA –
THE Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF) has appointed Elias Kataya and Wisdom Mudenda as coaches for the national women and Under-20 boy’s teams respectively.
Kataya takes over from Musonda ‘The Bull’ Chinungu while Mudenda replaces Maybin Gunduzani who resigned early this year.
ZBF vice president Kennedy Mubita said Kataya was picked to drill the women team owing to his experience in the sport having also been Kennedy Kanyanta’s trainer when the latter, now national boxing team coach, won gold at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Mubita said in an interview yesterday that Kataya will be in-charge of the women team that has received an invitation from the International Boxing Association (IBA) to compete in a tournament to be held in South Korea from November 15 to 25.
He said IBA would sponsor the two female boxers and a coach for the championship while ZBF will only be required to provide uniform for the boxers.
“We are confident that these changes will help revamp the standards of boxing in the country and get us back to the time when our boxers used to win medals at international events.
