THE Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has urged the Government to consider allocating more resources to the agricultural sector in the 2015 Budget to improve the country’s food security.
ZACA executive secretary Samuel Simutunda said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that there was need to allocate more resources towards the agricultural sector as it was one sector which could propel the country’s economy and create job opportunities for local people.
In the 2014, the Government allocated K3.08 billion towards the agricultural sector out of which 51 per cent was set aside  for diversification programmes.
“Agriculture is one sector which can propel Zambia’s economic growth.?So our appeal to the Government is that it should invest more resources in this sector, if the country’s food security is to improve,” Mr Simutunda said.
He said the country’s food security could be improved by empowering small-scale farmers and mechanising the agro sector.
