THE Shepolopolo are undergoing medical examinations at the Levy Mwanawasa Hospital in readiness for the Africa Women Championship (AWC) slated for next month in Namibia.
Coach Charles Bwale said in an interview yesterday that it was important for the girls to undergo medical test as it is a requirement from the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF).
“AWC is a big competition and it is vital that we carry healthy players that will represent the country adequately in the championship we shall be competing in for the first time,” he said.
He said the team will not train for two-days owing to the medicals and will resume training on Saturday.
Bwale said the team has to make an impact at the AWC by ensuring that it grabs a World Cup slot adding that the team will go to Namibia as contenders and not mere participants.
“We qualified to the AWC championship on merit and we will go for there as competitors and not mere participants,” he said.
Bwale expressed confidence that his team will be ready for the championship and will not be initimdated by hosts Namibia and eight-time champions Nigeria.
“We qualified just like any other team and we will not be intimidated by Nigeria who have won the competition eight times,” he said.
Nigeria has on the AWC eight times since its inception in 1991 and has only missed out the title twice to Equatorial Guinea in 2008 and 2012.
Meanwhile, Cameroon is today in the country tomorrow to set up her camping
base ahead of the AWC and is set to play two friendly games with the Shepolopolo.
