UN faces more challenges

THE United Nations (UN) has employed sustained efforts to make the work of the General Assembly more focused as World leaders converge at the headquarters for the 69th session.
According to information obtained here, the World body is faced with more challenges which need to be tackled with more vigor particularly conflicts in the Middle East, the Russian-Ukraine woes and those obtaining in some parts of Africa.
“Efforts have continued in order to improve practices and working methods of committees, enhance the role of the general committee and to examine the role of the Assembly in the process to select the Secretary-General,” says a report obtained ahead of the general debate.
Some of the items on the agenda include election of officers of the main committees, election of the vice-presidents of the General Assembly and finally the general debate.
There will also be emphasis on promotion of sustainable growth, maintenance of international peace and security as well as promotion of human rights.
Also of utmost importance is the discussion on development of Africa, promotion of justice and international peace.
On Africa, the General Assembly will examine causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development.
